Throughout the first novel, Raven is constantly manipulated by powerful sorcerers and political figures who seek to use the Company as pawns in their grand schemes. Despite being used repeatedly, he retains a fierce autonomy, often turning the tables on those who underestimate him. He meets his end in the second novel, Shadows Linger, sacrificing himself to save Darling from the sorcerer Limper, an act that preserves the Company's future even as it ends his own. His story is less about conquering kingdoms and more about protecting those he cares for against the encroaching darkness of a world intent on self-destruction through magic.
